Sorry I haven’t posted here for a while…but at least your inbox is not filling up because of me. (Smile)
I’ve been reading up a storm and finally got around to sharing what I am learning. Here are the books that have past through my hands over the last several weeks.
1. Cholesterol Clarity: What the HDL is Wrong with My Numbers? by Jimmy Moore with Eric Westman M.D.
Thumbs up – you should read this if you at all interested in inflammation and heart health. And no you will not need a medical dictionary to get through this. I have a much more detailed review here. You need to read this!
2. Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms When My Lab Tests Are Normal? by Datis Kharrazian
Since I am always trying to get a handle on my own symptoms and I have quite a few coaching clients with this same issue, I like to research all I can on this subject. This is a very useful handbook on figuring out what is going on and what treatment options might be best suited to your specific situation. I am looking forward to reading his newer book on brain health called, Why Isn’t My Brain Working?: A Revolutionary Understanding of Brain Decline and Effective Strategies to Recover Your Brain’s Health. Stay tuned for a review on this one once I get through it all – it’s over 600 pages!’
3. Naked Calories: The Carltons’ Simple 3-Step Plan to Micronutrient Sufficiency by Jayson and Mira Carlton
I like this book and the emphasis on micro rather then macro nutrients. Macronutrients are Fat, Protein and Carbohydrates. Micro refers to the essential vitamins an minerals. I’m not sure how simple their plan is…the do recommend supplementing for everyone and they happen to make what looks like an amazing multivitamin and mineral supplement…but it’s a bit pricey and it also doesn’t allow for any customization. It’s hard for me to think that a 200 pound man in pretty good health is going to need to the exact same supplement as a 120 pound female with diabetes. I got my copy at the library, I’m still deciding whether to add this ones on my personal bookshelf.
4. Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers by David Perlmutter
An informative read for sure. And a wake up call to get your blood sugar regulated if you want to avoid dementia as you age. Definitely worth taking the time to read. It starts out with a self assessment test for your risk factors. The rest of the book is divided into 3 major sections: The Whole Grain Truth, Grain Brain Rehab and Say Goodbye to Grain Brain. I like the food and lifestyle recommendations (but you won’t if you eat bread – just a warning). You can always try his approach for a month and see how you are doing…then reevaluate.
5. Once Upon a Flock: Life with My Soulful Chickens by Lauren Scheuer
A totally fun read that is beautifully illustrated and photographed. If you have backyard chickens or want some, you should read this book! It’s funny and endearing as well as informative. My daughter (10 years old) sped through this in about two days. It’s a quick and satisfying read.
